Pétur Sakari (b. 1992) is a Finnish-born organist and improviser with strong Icelandic roots and a distinctive Nordic artistic identity. He is internationally recognized for his mastery of the French organ tradition, exceptional improvisation skills, and a repertoire that spans from early music to contemporary works and world premieres. Sakari made his solo debuts at iconic venues such as Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris under the invitation of Olivier Latry, and at Turku Music Festival upon the invitation of conductor Klaus Mäkelä, quickly establishing an international profile. He also released notable solo recordings and signed a solo recording contract with BIS Records at the age of 21. Combining Nordic clarity with French elegance, he is emerging as one of the most compelling organists of his generation, bringing a bold, personal voice to cathedrals and concert halls across Europe and beyond.

His musical trajectory began at an early age: he gave his first public recital at 13 and achieved international recognition at 17 when he was named Young Artist of the Year at the Lahti International Organ Week. During his teenage years, he was also honored as Young Artist of the Year at all major Finnish organ festivals, marking the start of a rapid international ascent.

He made his debut at Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris at the invitation of Olivier Latry, and was later invited by conductor Klaus Mäkelä to give his “carte blanche” solo recital at the Turku Music Festival. Since these debuts, Sakari has performed widely across Europe in major concert halls, including the Helsinki Music Centre, Stockholm Concert Hall, Gothenburg Concert Hall, Budapest’s Müpa, and the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg. His cathedral performances include Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris, Stuttgart’s Matthäuskirche, Verden Cathedral, St. Josef in Bonn, Helsinki Cathedral, Turku Cathedral, Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík, Stephansdom in Vienna, and the UNESCO-listed Poblet Monastery. He has also appeared on numerous television and radio broadcasts across Europe.

Sakari maintains close artistic collaborations with the Grammy-nominated vocal ensemble VOCES8, as well as leading European opera singers, including Jorma Hynninen, Soile Isokoski, Camilla Nylund, and Tuomas Katajala, and performs duo repertoire with Thierry Escaich, the renowned French composer and organist, titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris. As an orchestral soloist, he has performed with several orchestras, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Pori Sinfonietta, Vaasa City Orchestra, and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.

His recordings for BIS Records and Fuga, as well as appearances on Sony Classical releases, have received wide international acclaim, with publications such as Gramophone, Diapason, and American Record Guide regularly listing his solo recordings among the year’s finest. Alongside his active performing career, Sakari has served as Artistic Director of the Helsinki Organ Festival, as Chairman of the Organum Society, and acted as an expert in the planning of the organ at the Helsinki Music Centre, Musiikkitalo. His artistic focus includes the French organ tradition, improvisation, and interdisciplinary projects.

Sakari began his organ studies privately in Finland with Pekka Suikkanen, continuing with Tuomas Karjalainen and Kalevi Kiviniemi. His principal teachers later included Thierry Escaich and Vincent Warnier in Paris. During his teenage years, he attended masterclasses with renowned organists Wolfgang Rübsam, Pierre Pincemaille, Ton Koopman, and Daniel Roth. He also formally studied at the Helsinki Conservatory, the Sibelius Academy, and the École Normale de Musique in Paris.
